Course Reflection
Throughout this course, I have read two books, A Land Remembered and The History of Florida. Throughout my blog I mainly used The History of Florida, that is because this book is all factual information. The book A Land Remembered is a fictional story of a family, based on the history of Florida. This book is a great book to read alongside The History of Florida because you get a better sense of what life was like throughout Florida's history. The only thing it does not cover is The Spanish first concurring Florida which was in the 1500s. A Land Remembered starts the time period at about 1863 when there was tension between white settlers and the Indians. As we read through our textbook, the fictional story followed. So as we read about the different Seminole Wars, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II, A Land Remembered followed the same war with the same family but with different generations. Reading through The History of Florida, we see how the upper class is the ones who become leaders, the lower class is your working-class basically working on farms or factories; the upper class that was talked about was mainly white men from wealthy families, the lower-class is men, women, and children of African American descend. Some of the assignments we were tasked with doing took some time, especially when we have to research what we are talking about and give the resource we got said information. The information also had to be relevant to what we are learning about in our textbook. The quizzes we took for the book A Land Remembered, were mainly written responses except for the first quiz. The first quiz was multiple choice except for the last question which was a written response. Our professor let us choose between being a tester or a blogger, I obviously chose a blogger. Being a blogger, I had to do a lot of research, I mainly pulled information from The History of Florida that way my information is relevant to what I am reading that week. However, when I did the Spanish Mission and Forts assignment I tried to take information from the website of the Spanish Mission and Fort. The reason for that is a historian has already proven the information on the website is factual and not based on opinion or assumptions. All the assignment I have done has made me an immature historian. This course was fun to take, I am not a history type of person unless it is a topic that intrigues me, but this course made me want to keep learning. I will say I highly recommend taking time and learning about where you live or even the state you were born in because you never know what kind of interesting stories you'll hear that came from your city. For example, I live in Jacksonville Florida, and before Hollywood was Hollywood, the film industry started in Jacksonville, if the film industry was not run out of this city and state, the film industry would still be here in Florida. I can not wait to keep reading and researching about Florida and visit all the historical sites.
